It is no mystery why people pay a few hundred dollars for an automatic litter box. Scooping and cleaning a cat box is pretty disgusting, specially with more than one cat in a house. The Litter Robot truly appears like a small robot along with a spherical head. The dome top has an entrance for the cat above a little step that will trigger the machine. The dome is filled with regular clumping litter, and this is where the cat will do his "business". Beneath is a tray lined with an ordinary kitchen trash bag. After the cat is finished, Litter Robot sifts out the clumps and solid waste products and deposits this into the bottom tray.

Even though this is an expensive bit of technology, Litter Robot uses regular store bought clumping litter as well as garbage totes, and it is more conservative with litter. It would only use about half the quantity standard boxes use over time. In the long run, one can save a bit of money by using it. There are downsides, however. This is a large unit that may not fit in all bathrooms. Unfortunately, it might be too intimidating for some cats and kittens or frighten them. They are funny creatures and sometimes protest changes.

The Cat Genie is a little more complicated in design. It looks a lot like just a little toilet, only the bowl is filled with special granules instead of standard kitty litter. The cat uses the granules as usual, then the toilet "flushes" itself on a seven minute cycle. You will find an automatic scoop that clears out solid waste, and the urine filters through the granules to the disposal tray underneath. The flushing action also cleans the bowl with a solution contained in a special cartridge.

There are some unfavorable points for Cat Genie as well. The unit must be hooked to a water source and an electrical outlet. For that reason it may be difficult for some to get a space appropriate for the machine. Cat Genie also requires special granules and cleaning cartridges, which can become a financial burden over time. As with the other device, there is still the possibility of the cat rejecting the system and refusing to use it.

Automatic litter boxes are great time savers, and they allow people to avoid the nastiness of cat waste as much as possible. For this reason alone many are willing to invest a chunk of change in the technologies.

This Litter Robot review is quite positive generally with the only recurring complaint being its size. Cat Genie has good feedback except for the cost and annoyance of the special accessories and the demand for a water hook-up. In the end, the cats are likely to have the last say since they are the ones who will choose whether they actually use the new gadget.
