Once the eggs from the silk worm hatch, they are then fed mulberry leaves. The young caterpillars get bigger quickly, in a mere thirty five days they are ten thousand times heavier than when first hatched. At this moment they start to turn a silk cocoon.

The silk production begins with the worm, it is actually produced from glands in the silkworm's head. The silk is then spun out in fluid form through holes called spinneret. As this liquid touches the surroundings, it becomes a solid and forms silk. These little worms can each spin roughly a mile of silk and they engulf by themselves in a cocoon over a few days.

At the moment the worm would change to a moth. Yet just before that happens they are usually killed. The intention of killing them at this point is because when they are ready to exit the cocoon they will emit a fluid that dissolves the silk so they can exit the cocoon. This process spoils the silk. Obviously not all of them are killed, a portion are set aside for reproduction.

After the cocoon are harvested, the undamaged cocoons are usually brushed to find the end of the silk filament. These are then put on a reel. Up to one thousand yards of silk are contained in each cocoon. This is referred to as raw silk. A silk yarn can be made from joining several filaments. Taking this yarn and combining it with wool creates silk wool, it is one of the most beautiful products used in the making of garments or goods, beautiful silk wool fabric.
